A typical 10–14 day rental for a 20 yard roll-off runs $350–$600 in most US markets, all-in. But "all-in" is where operators differ: some quotes include disposal fees and fuel surcharges, others add them at delivery. Always ask for a total price including tonnage overage fees before you commit. In high-cost markets (Boston, NYC, Seattle, San Jose), the same rental easily runs $600–$900. The most common rental mistake is undersizing. The 20 yard roll-off is the right choice for most residential projects — a kitchen remodel, a bathroom renovation, clearing out a garage, or a roof tear-off on a small home. A 10 yard is fine for a single-room cleanout or a small bathroom gut. A 30 yard is for whole-home renovations or new construction debris. The 40 yard is for commercial jobs. The four fees most operators don't mention upfront: (1) Tonnage overages — most rentals include 1–3 tons; going over typically costs $75–$100 per extra ton. Heavy debris like concrete, dirt, and roofing shingles eats through weight allowances fast. (2) Extended rental fees — if you keep the dumpster past the agreed dates, expect $5–$15 per day. (3) Prohibited materials surcharges — tires, mattresses, appliances, and hazmat materials often trigger extra fees or refusal to pick up. (4) Fuel/environmental surcharges — some operators add these at invoicing, not at booking. Get all of these in writing before delivery.
If the dumpster is entirely on private property (your driveway, behind a gate, on your land), you typically don't need a permit. If it needs to go on a public street, sidewalk, or in an alley — which is common in cities with small driveways — most municipalities require a permit, usually $25–$150 and issued within 1–3 business days. Your operator should know the local rules and can often handle the permit for you. HOAs are a separate issue: some prohibit visible dumpsters in driveways or require placement behind a fence. Items most operators won't accept: hazardous materials (paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, batteries), electronics (TVs, computers — most states have e-waste regulations), appliances containing Freon (refrigerators, AC units — require certified removal), tires (disposal fees make most operators refuse them), and medical waste. Concrete, dirt, and brick can usually go in, but check weight limits first — these materials hit tonnage caps fast. Always ask your operator for their specific prohibited materials list before you load.
